Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)
The Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS) is available to people with new or very recent minor eye problems to get the help they need quickly and easily closer to home. Patients can self-present to an optometry or optician’s practice that provides this service.
The following eligible conditions can be referred to a participating Optometrist:
Blepharitis
Retinal Lesions – abnormal changes in the back of the eye
Amblyopia (lazy eye)
Trichiasis (ingrowing eye lashes)
Low Vision
Episcleritis
Glaucoma Referral Refinement (IOP)
Posterior Vitreous Detachment
Epiphora (watery eye)
Abrasion
Floaters and flashes
Allergies
Pterygium
Cysts
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction - occurs when the Meibomian glands (which make the oily layer of the Tear Film), are not working properly and become clogged
Comorbidities (systematic disease affecting the eye)
Inflammation (swelling of the eye)
Chalazion
Chorodial Naevus Suspicion
Foreign Body and Emergency Contact Lens Removal
Monitoring of OHT/ Low Risk Glaucoma with Normal Visual Fields
